I met someone from Chicago last weekend. Two things: I’ve never been to Chicago, and I love hot dogs. So I more or less invited myself to the Windy City for a Chicago-dog tour. She smiled and lowered her voice, “I still know where to get a foie gras dog.”Foie gras is illegal in Chicago. There’s also talk of banning trans fats. It’s now apparent that vegemite has been banned, bringing an unforeseen street cred to the humble Vegemite sandwich. What’s next for the seedy underbelly of gastronomy? Black-market partially hydrogenated soybean oil?

But I’d eat a transfat-vegemite-fioe-gras-hotdog if I thought I was getting away with something.

The FDA seems to think it isn’t banned. http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/vegemite.asp
